MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University President Al Goldfarb received the Western Illinois 2011 Cathy O'Neill Couza Award for Outstanding Leadership in Diversity (formerly called the Equal Opportunity and Access Director's Award) for his contributions to the University and the community at the 22nd annual President's Excellence in Diversity Awards Reception held May 5.

"Dr. Goldfarb exemplifies a professional and personal commitment to promoting justice, equity and diversity through education, personal example and action. During my time at WIU, I had the privilege of working with Al on a variety of projects and issues that were designed to increase inclusiveness at WIU," said Cathy Couza, former director of Equal Opportunity and Access at WIU. "He fully understands the historic discrimination and alienation felt by individuals based on their race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, disability, age and all individual differences.

"I was always inspired by his approach to sensitive issues. It is rare to find someone in a leadership position whose actions consistently bring people together by listening and really hearing all perspectives," she added. "This year's award is presented to one of the kindest, most compassionate, and most dedicated individuals I have known. Al Goldfarb is a proven leader with a sensitivity to individual differences, a collaborative management style and an understanding of all issues facing higher education in this critical time."
