WIU Hosts High School Biology Day December 2

MACOMB, IL – Area high school biology students and teachers will participate in Western Illinois University's annual Biology Day from 8:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2 in Waggoner Hall.

The event offers high school students the opportunity to explore various aspects of the field of biology as well as to attend seminars and participate in the Biology Bowl and Hall competitions. The Bowl Competition allows teams of four students from different schools to compete with one another regarding their biological content knowledge. In the Hall Competition, students examine the various display cases in Waggoner Hall and answer questions about those displays.

Seminars will be directed toward advanced biology and many of the topics will include discussions of recent research while other topics will focus on career opportunities. WIU faculty and biology students will present the seminars.

Individual student trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place teams for the Biology Bowl Competition. School trophies and prizes also will be awarded for first through third place. School prizes include: first place, a digital microscope camera and a microscope cleaning kit; second place, a plant tissues lab kit and a microscope cleaning kit; and third place, a microscope cleaning kit.
