MACOMB, IL -- Student staff members of The Western Courier, the student-run newspaper at Western Illinois University, earned five awards, including a first place honor for best feature story, at the Illinois College Press Association's annual convention in Chicago on February 17-18.

"I'm proud of the Western Courier staff members who were honored by the Illinois College Press Association," said Director of Student Publications and Western Courier Adviser Richard Moreno. "They work hard to produce a first class newspaper, so it's great when they're recognized for all that effort by an association of their peers."

Western Courier staff members who earned Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) awards included:

  • Alyse Thompson, senior, journalism (West Chicago, IL) — First Place, Best Feature Story
  • Michael Vaught, senior, journalism (Evanston, IL) — Second Place, Best Sports Column
  • Garrick Hodge, sophomore, broadcasting (Winthrop Harbor, IL) — Third Place, Best Sports Feature
  • Bill Welt, graduate student, history (Springfield, IL) — Third Place, Headline Writing
  • Patrick Haynes, senior, journalism (Round Lake Beach, IL) — Honorable Mention, Best Critical Review (other than film)

The ICPA membership includes 39 college and university papers in Illinois. ICPA awards were judged by a panel of professional newspaper journalists from papers throughout the state.
