MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Julie DeWees, interim vice president of administrative services (VPAS) at Western Illinois University, has been named the vice president of administrative services, effective April 1, according to WIU President Jack Thomas.

DeWees, who has served as the interim vice president since July 1, 2011 following the retirement of Jackie Thompson, had previously served as director of the budget office since April 2005. As budget director, DeWees was responsible for organizing and monitoring the University's $200 million budget, and she planned and coordinated Western's annual operating and capital budgets; determined fiscal year appropriated and auxiliary funds allocations; and submitted budget-related requests to the WIU Board of Trustees, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Governor's Office of Management and Budget and the Illinois State Legislature.

"Julie's broad financial experience, and her many years of service at Western Illinois University will provide a seamless transition as we move forward on numerous campus initiatives," Thomas said.

She began her career at Western in March 1986 as an accounting clerk in Human Resources. In January 1993, DeWees joined the budget office as a budget analyst I and was named assistant budget officer in June 1997. DeWees earned her bachelor's (1983) and master's (1991) degrees from Western.

The vice president of administrative services, who serves as the treasurer to the Board of Trustees, is the University's chief administrative, business and financial officer. The VPAS is the spokesperson and liaison on financial matters to various state and federal agencies, and to the many external publics the University serves. The VPAS provides direction and leadership for the delivery of Universitywide services in the areas of Administrative Information Management Systems; Business Services; Document and Publication Services; Human Resources; Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Executive Institute and Media Resource Center; Physical Plant; Public Safety; Purchasing; and Risk Management and Emergency Preparedness. The VPAS also oversees the insurance and state-mandated ethics programs, provides University coordination with contracted legal counsel and serves as administrative liaison to the Council of Administrative Personnel and the Civil Service Employees Council.
