Labor Talk Aug. 27 at Malpass Library

MACOMB, IL — Labor Day Weekend is the annual time set aside in the United States to memorialize the contributions that workers and unions have made to American society.
To celebrate the annual commemoration, Western Illinois University Libraries is hosting a talk by WIU Department of History Instructor Andres Hijar, a labor historian, who will speak about one aspect of his research: the relationship between American and Mexican labor movements. Hijar's presentation is set to begin at noon Wednesday, Aug. 27 in the Leslie F. Malpass Library, room 180.
Questions to be addressed during Hijar's talk include:
- How did the labor and social movements in America influence those in Mexico and vice versa?; and
- In particular, did labor radicals in the U.S. influence the Mexican labor movement?
To answer these questions, Hijar will be discussing the historical relationship between radical segments of organized labor in the U.S. and Mexico. He will talk about the effect the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and communism, respectively, had on Mexican workers, comparing Ciudad Juárez and the Hidalgo Mining District in the state of Chihuahua.
