MACOMB, IL - - Three Western Illinois University (WIU) advisors presented at the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Regional conference. Jennifer Grimm, academic advisor in the communication department; Caryn Morgan, lead academic advisor in the WIU College of Arts and Sciences; and Julie Brines, academic advisor in the University Advising and Academic Services Center, presented "Assessment: Self Review, External Review, and Results" April 8 in Indianapolis, IN.

The presentation, an expansion of the presentation given in May 2014 at the Illinois Academic Advising Association (ILACADA) titled, "Undergoing an External Review: How Assessment Builds Collaboration and Fosters Innovation," explained WIU's experience and gave recommendations of how the process could work for others.

WIU's academic advising program underwent an assessment in June 2014 that included an external review of the program and a visit from a reviewer. Because external reviews were fairly new to academic advising programs nationwide, WIU's team decided the presentation topic was exceptionally suitable at that time.

"The call for proposals for the ILACADA conference came out around the same time the self-assessment team was completing the assessment process, and several of us felt it was a timely topic for the conference," said Morgan.
