WIU History Receives National Recognition Through NCSS

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University History Teacher Education program has once again received full national recognition from the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS), the organization that authorizes history and social studies education programs at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

This is the highest level of recognition NCSS grants, and the WIU program will not be due for another review until 2023.

"Every five to seven years, History Teacher Education programs must seek recognition from the National Council for the Social Studies," said WIU History Chair Simon Cordery. "This year, once again, WIU passed with flying colors. The NCSS praised the program, labeling it 'excellent' and noting that the report submitted by the WIU history program offered a 'clear and detailed' way to measure student progress, providing 'sufficient evidence of their candidates' mastery of their content area.'"

Cordery added that the program, according to NCSS, offered "a clear indication of the candidates' ability to successfully teach social studies content and to have a meaningful impact on P-12 student learning." As a result of the review of the program, WIU's History Teacher Education program is nationally recognized as exceeding the standards expected for teacher education.

The program is directed by WIU History Professor Ginny Boynton and Curriculum and Instruction Professor Barry Witten.
