WIU Graduate Student Wins Poster Competition and ISAS Conference

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University chemistry graduate student Erik S. Sarnello, of Itasca, IL, recently won first place in the chemistry poster session of the Illinois State Academy of Science (ISAS) Conference in Chicago.

Sarnello competed in the graduate posters division of the academy's chemistry division. His poster was "Synthesis and Characterization of Solid-State Materials."

"WIU and my research mentor, Dr. Brian Bellott, provided me with the tools, knowledge and encouragement, which allowed me to receive this honor," said Sarnello.

ISAS was founded in 1907, with its organizational meeting held in Springfield, IL, Dec. 7, 1907. Every year since, an annual meeting of the Illinois State Academy of Science has been held at varying locations around the state.

Likewise, the Academy's refereed journal has been published continuously since its inaugural first volume in 1908. According to the academy,"Our mission is the promotion of scientific research, the diffusion of scientific knowledge, and the unification of scientific interests in Illinois."
