Free 'Leave No Trace' Workshop at Horn Field Campus Feb. 20

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University's Horn Field Campus will host a free "Leave No Trace" awareness workshop from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20.

The workshop will introduce the seven principles of "Leave No Trace," the cover, low-impact recreational techniques used to be better stewards of the environment. Participants will receive a certificate for successful completion, which is acknowledged by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

Registration is open to the public; masks are required; and CDC guidelines will be followed.

The workshop is being taught by WIU graduate student Kassey Trahanas, of Mobile, AL, who spent several years as an environmental educator, including three years as an eco-tour guide for AmeriCorps and local environmental agencies in costal Alabama. She recently became a Leave No Trace Master Educator.

This is the first in a series of outdoor workshops planned this spring at Horn Field Campus. The series was developed by WIU RPTA graduate student Greg Strobel, of Lisle, IL as part of his work toward a master's degree. After receiving his bachelor's degree in RPTA from WIU in 2015, Strobel worked for the American Youth Foundation, Wilderness Inquiry and Alaska Crossings.

Other free courses being offered as part of the outdoor skills workshops at Horn Field Campus, 985 China Road, include:

• Saturday, Feb. 27, 1-3 p.m. – Camp Setup and Tarp Construction

• Saturday, March 6, 1-3 p.m. – Fire Building, Camp Stoves and Outdoor Cooking

• Saturday, March 13, 1-5 p.m. – High Ropes Course and Climbing Tower

• Saturday, April 10, 1-3 p.m. – Packing a Pack, Map Reading and Navigation

• Saturday, April 24, 1-5 p.m. – Intro to Lake Canoeing
