Western IL Regional History Documents Available Online
October 2, 2012
MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University Libraries' Digitization Unit recently added several local historical artifacts to its Regional History Digital Collection. According to Jeffrey Hancks, archives and special collections unit coordinator, this collection features printed materials documenting the history of West Central Illinois, selected from WIU Libraries' Archives and Special Collections Unit.
The collection specifically includes the Grantham Letters, Haberman WWI Letters, National Union League Pledge, Salem Baptist Association 1861-1869 and the W. A. Remington Letter. Hancks said Western Illinois University Libraries is committed to making its unique and rare collections available any time and any place.
"By digitizing and putting these one-of-a-kind manuscripts online, patrons worldwide can discover more about the fascinating history and culture of the Western Illinois region," he noted.
The Regional Historical Collection features a scanned image of the historical item, and a description of the item, and if appropriate, a transcription of the document language.
"The National Union League Pledge is dated February 18, 1865, and is a signed pledge by a constituent agreeing to give unwavering loyalty to the United States government and to support its efforts to suppress 'The Rebellion' of the southern states involved in the Confederacy," Linda Wade, digitization unit coordinator, said. "This is just one example of the distinctiveness of the collection."
The Regional Historical Collection is available at http://collections.carli.illinois.edu/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=/wiu_rhist.
