Broadcasting Students Get First-Hand Election Experience

MACOMB, IL – Department of broadcasting students from Western Illinois University’s College of Fine Arts and Communication got some election night experience producing and broadcasting an election show on campus television and helping with a regional broadcast.

In Macomb, a one-hour show aired Tuesday, Nov. 6 on wiutv3, with hosts Patrick Stout, an academic advisor in the broadcasting department, and Keith Boeckelman, chairperson of the WIU Political Science Department.

Reporters from wiutv3 presented election results during the show and Illinois 94th District Rep. Norine Hammond, who was unopposed in Tuesday’s election, stopped by for an interview.

Faculty advisors for the show were Sam Edsall and Jasmine Garcia.

Students from the WIU Department of Broadcasting and News3 also traveled to Moline, IL, and helped with election night coverage for WQAD-TV, channel 8. Students who made the trip for the opportunity were Dan Firnback, a senior broadcasting major from Ringwood, IL; Megan Warren, a junior broadcasting major from Mokena, IL; Rachel Steibing, a senior broadcasting major from Chicago and Jack Pluta, a sophomore broadcasting major from Waukegan.
