Safe Space Training

March 18, 2013

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- Interested in becoming a Safe Space ally at Western Illinois University? WIU's LGBTQA Resource Center will offer Safe Space training to faculty, staff and administrators at both the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses later this month.

The two-hour interactive training is designed to increase faculty, staff, and administrators' understanding and awareness of issues facing the LGBTQA community. Safe Space training was created to promote inclusivity and foster a welcoming campus climate to individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions.

The training sessions will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, March 25 in the University Union Lincoln Room, and Wednesday, March 27 in the Union Sandburg Lounge; and from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 29 in the Union Fox Room. The WIU-QC training information will be announced soon.

After completion of the LGBTQA Resource Center's Safe Space training, participants will be able to identify and define terminology related to the LGBTQA community; recognize and describe what being an ally means to them; name local, community and national resources and discuss their relation to them as Safe Space Allies; identify issues facing the LGBTQA community and outline strategies they believe will validate and support LGBTQA individuals in their learning environments; and analyze their own gender, sexuality, positionality, privilege, and oppression and reflect on how that impacts their practices.

Each participant that completes the program will receive a certificate of completion and a Safe Space ally sticker, which will serve as a visual representation of support to the needs of the LGBTQA community.

To participate in a training session, send your name, email, contact number and department name to lgbtqa@wiu.edu. Individuals who cannot attend a training session should email lgbtqa@wiu.edu. For more information or to request accommodations, contact the center by email or call (309) 298-4004.
