WIU, Macomb Join Together for Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service
April 8, 2013
MACOMB, IL – The first ever Mayor's Day of Recognition for National Service will be held Tuesday, April 9 across the country to highlight the impact of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs.
In cooperation with Western Illinois University, the Macomb community has been the recipient of work by national service members for many years through the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs' (IIRA) Peace Corps Fellows and MAPPING the Future of Your Community/AmericCorps VISTA programs.
Currently, Jean Davenport, of Macomb, serves with the Macomb Food Cooperative, and Alice Daugherty, of Macomb, serves with the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry program.
"Volunteerism is a vital part of any community development effort and Macomb is just one of the communities where we actively engage national service members and volunteers in efforts to address important community needs," said IIRA Director Chris Merret.
Volunteers from the national service programs have also been used by the city of Macomb in a variety of capacities.
"Obviously the city of Macomb and greater community have been well served by our partnership with volunteers and fellows from the AmeriCorps program," said Macomb Mayor Michael Inman. "We have a history of utilizing those folks in community development and the city attorney's office. We are grateful for the relationship."
Inman signed a proclamation Friday, April 5, marking April 9 as National Service Recognition Day in Macomb.
Nationally, more than four million AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and other volunteers have served in over 70,000 locations across the United States.
