April 15, 2013
MACOMB, IL – Mother McAuley High School senior Brenna Smith, of Evergreen Park, IL, has been selected for Western Illinois University's Centennial Honors Scholarship, which covers four years of tuition, fees and a residence hall room at the school.
High school students with an ACT score of 32 or higher and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher are eligible for the scholarship.
Smith said she will likely major in communication and economics at Western.
Smith said she chose Western because she was impressed with the campus during a visit to Macomb.
"I loved the atmosphere and I could picture myself there," she said. "Western is doing a lot of wonderful things on campus. It is a welcoming place, and I got the impression they really want me to succeed and are dedicated to helping me do that."
She would also like to participate in student government and work with the campus newspaper, The Western Courier.
In high school, Smith participated in student council, the student ambassadors program, Action/Reaction, McAuley Mentors, Respect Life, Junior Classical League, Quill & Scroll, Inscape Newspaper, yearbook, National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and youth ministry.
After graduation from WIU, Smith plans to continue on to graduate school or law school.
