May 2, 2013
MACOMB, IL – Amos Alonzo Stagg High School senior Emily Szott, of Orland Park, IL, has been selected for Western Illinois University's Centennial Honors Scholarship, which covers four years of tuition, fees and a residence hall room at the school.
High school students with an ACT score of 32 or higher and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher are eligible for the scholarship.
Szott said she chose Western because of its zoology program.
"I was very excited to hear about the research opportunities available at the Kibbe Field Station, the Niabi Zoo and Chicago's Shedd Aquarium," she said. "When I visited Western, they were able to answer any questions I had. The staff is very qualified and personable, and Western really makes an effort to help each and every student to prepare for life after college."
At Western, Szott said she will likely major in zoology. She would also like to look into participation with the University Band and to explore a variety of student organizations.
In high school, Szott participated in band, wind symphony, marching band, percussion band and pep band, the drama club and spring musicals, volleyball, National Honor Society, Phi Alpha Theta, a social studies honor society, Relay for Life and wrote essays for a variety of competitions.
After college, Szott plans to continue on to graduate school for marine and aquatic biology.
