Former WIU Professor Passes Away in Macomb
June 24, 2013
MACOMB, IL – Former Western Illinois University Professor Billy Dean Keever passed away in Macomb on Friday, June 21. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 27 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, with visitation scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 26 at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home in Macomb.
Keever was a professor of health sciences until his retirement in 1999. He came to WIU in 1974 after previously working at the U.S. Public Health Service in Georgia and at Wyoming University.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Keever spent many hours officiating track meets at Western. During his time at Western, he took a one-semester sabbatical to raise money for and help design and commission a sculpture of Lee Calhoun, WIU's track coach from 1980-1989. Keever drove his own truck to Colorado to pick up the finished sculpture and delivered it to its current location at the entrance to the WIU track.
He received his bachelor's degree from Colorado State University, his master's degree from Wyoming University and his doctorate degree from the University of Utah.
Keever, a member of numerous service clubs, is survived by his wife, Pat, and his children, William, Heidi and Keo. For additional obituary information, visit dodsworthfh.com.
Memorials can be made to the Lee Calhoun Memorial Scholarship Fund at WIU.
