PARCC Conference to be Held at Western Nov. 8
October 23, 2013
MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach will host, "New Directions - New Connections: Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the Common Core State Standards" on Friday, Nov. 8 in Macomb.
The conference will be held in the University Union and will include presentations from PARCC Illinois, from Achieve and from WIU educators.
PARCC is a group of states committed to the development of an assessment system for the Common Core State Standards, and Achieve is a nonprofit education reform organization based in Washington, DC, which focuses on college and career readiness.
Sessions planned as part of the conference include:
• "PARCC Prep – "Guidance for the Small Rural School," by Tim Farquer, superintendent/principal of Williamsfield schools.
• "A National Perspective on the Common Core and PARCC," by Callie Riley, senior policy associate for postsecondary engagement at Achieve.
• "Preparing for PARCC and the Common Core Classroom": Elementary level – by Professor Kimberly Hartweg, WIU Department of Mathematics. Middle school/secondary level – by Associate Professor Robert Mann, WIU Department of Mathematics.
• "A Snapshot Look at the PARCC Assessments for English Language Arts": Elementary level – By Professor Kathy Barclay, WIU Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Middle school/secondary level – by Professor Laurel Borgia, with Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
Conference registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Heritage Gallery, and sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Registration for the conference is $95 and must be completed before Nov. 6. Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs) or WIU Continuing Education Units are available for the conference.
