Excellence in Diversity Reception May 8

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's 25th annual Excellence in Diversity Awards Reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, May 8 in the Multicultural Center on the WIU-Macomb campus.
Nominees will be recognized for Excellence in Leadership, Education, and Service. In addition, the Dupuis Leadership Award in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Communities and the Dupuis Leadership Award in Historically Underrepresented Communities will be awarded. The 2014 Cathy O'Neill Couza Award for Outstanding Leadership in Diversity will also be presented. Gabriel Lara, director of Casa Latina, will be this year's featured speaker.
The awards, which are presented by President Jack Thomas, are designed to celebrate diversity and multicultural leadership efforts that have advanced Western's Strategic Plan,"Higher Values in Higher Education," increased diversity and created a campus climate that welcomes and supports all individuals.
Nominees for this year's awards include:
Excellence in Education: Peter Cole, history; Pat McGrath, Campus Recreation; Tara Buchannan, Disability Resource Center; Mohmmad Siddiqi, English and journalism; Michael Rogers, admissions; Stephanie Williams, Disability Resource Center; Campus Rec/Center for International Studies; and UNITY.
Excellence in Leadership: Nick Knowles, Campus Recreation; Tara Buchannan, Disability Resource Center; Mohmmad Siddiqi, English and journalism; Michael Rogers, admissions; Stephanie Williams, Disability Resource Center; The Sacred Circle; and UNITY.
Excellence in Service: Lisa Wen, chemistry; Bhavneet Walia, economics and decision sciences; Mohmmad Siddiqi, English and journalism; UNITY; and Peter Tarantola, a recreation, park and tourism administration student.
