May 8, 2014
MACOMB, IL — Last month, Western Illinois University Department of Kinesiology Professor Cindy Piletic was honored by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD, also known as "Shape America") for her community-based program, the "WIU Adapted Physical Activity Motor Clinic." According to WIU Department of Kinesiology Chair Janet Wigglesworth, the award recognizes outstanding community-based programming designed for improving the lives of individuals with disabilities.
"Cindy, along with Carrie Johnson from the West Central Illinois Special Education Coop [WCISEC], offers community-based programming for children and young adults in the gymnasium and pool on Friday mornings and provides hands on trainings for students majoring in physical education, special education and [communication sciences and disorders]," Wigglesworth explained in her blog, "Announcements from the Chair."
Piletic and Johnson were recognized in April at the AAHPERD National Conference in St. Louis.
In addition, WIU Kinesiology Professor Emeritus David Beaver was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the St. Louis conference.
According to AAHPERD, the Lifetime Achievement Award is given to one AAHPERD professional who best exemplifies Julian U. Stein's leadership in teaching, mentorship, writing, speaking and volunteerism at all levels of professional involvement.
Stein, according to the International Swimming Hall of Fame (see www.ishof.org/Honorees/99/99jstein.html), is "considered by many to be the father of adapted physical education in the United States."
