President Goldfarb's Letter to University Community About Sept. 11

September 4, 2002

Dear Western Illinois University Community,

On Wednesday, Sept. 11 the Western Illinois University and Macomb communities will set aside time for "In Remembrance of 9/11," the first anniversary of that fateful day. As President of Western I am extremely proud that a volunteer committee has taken the time to develop appropriate forms of recognition and remembrance, which have been announced on our website and in campus-wide publications.

I would like to call to your attention and encourage your participation in some fashion to the events and remembrances noted below.

At 8:55 a.m. the Sherman Hall bell tower will play "God Bless America" to prepare for a brief period of silent reflection at 9 a.m. I request that all University students, faculty, and staff observe the time of silence from 9 to 9:05 a.m. and that we halt all campus activities for those five minutes. I believe we must, as a community, reflect collectively on the events of September 11 and their implications for our nation and our world.

At 5 p.m. in the University Union plaza Student Government Association President Christopher Mullins-Silverstein and I will participate in a brief program of remembrance. I encourage all faculty, staff and students to participate. I believe this program gives us an opportunity to gather together to remember and reflect.

Your attendance would also be appreciated at the noon program "United We Stand/Salute to Local Heroes" to be held in Macomb's Chandler Park.

I know that we all lead complex and busy lives. If you are unable to participate in person I hope you will pause from your routine to consider the change Sept. 11 has brought to our lives and world, and in so doing find a renewed appreciation for family, loved ones, friends and University colleagues. Western is a remarkable community that always provides a beacon of hope and understanding during difficult times.

Sincerely,

Al Goldfarb
President
