President Sends Letter To WIU Students
January 31, 2007
Dear Western Students,
Earlier this week a forum was held to discuss ways to build positive community and student relationships. As we approach Super Bowl Sunday, I want to remind students that we all have a responsibility to celebrate in an appropriate fashion.
The overwhelming majority of our students are outstanding Macomb citizens. Unfortunately, the University has, on occasion, received complaints from local residents about students who are being disrespectful to property and local citizens, as well as to each other. I must remind all of our students that the University will not tolerate inappropriate behavior.
We will continue to work with Macomb and University police to make certain that those who damage property, harass others or engage in fights are sanctioned not only through the legal system, but also through Western's student judicial system. I ask you to consider how your actions reflect not only on you but on your University as well. Inappropriate acts tarnish the reputation of our entire community and cannot be tolerated.
At the same time, the University expects that local officials and law enforcement agencies will be mindful of the need to maintain positive working relationships with all members of the campus and community, even when they are faced with challenging situations created by over-exuberant individuals.
As we move into the full activities of the spring semester please remember that any acts of incivility can have serious consequences both within and outside of the University. Even though I am a New York Giants fan, I, too, will be cheering the Bears on to victory. I hope everyone has a safe and celebratory Super Bowl Sunday.
