11/09/10: Letter to Campus Community, Family & Friends
November 9, 2010
Dear Campus Community, Family and Friends:
As members of the Western Illinois University community, we understand your concerns and frustrations over the rash of threats regarding Tanner Hall and Thompson Hall. Our number one priority is our campus community's safety, and we will coordinate our efforts when such incidences occur to ensure a safe campus. During each of the threats, the residence halls were immediately evacuated and thorough searches were conducted before allowing students to return to the hall.
We apologize for the disruptions, but we must continue to focus on our students' safety. Our Western community is to be commended on its strength and resilience in dealing with these unfortunate situations. We appreciate the cooperation and patience of the students and staff living in Tanner Hall and Thompson Hall during these disruptions in their daily schedule, as well as the understanding and cooperation of the entire campus community. Incidents such as these truly disrupt the entire campus environment. We know that our faculty and staff will be supportive of the students whose lives have been disrupted, and we thank them for their support.
Please know that the University's Office of Public Safety police officers, along with federal law enforcement officials, are investigating the Nov. 4, Nov. 5 and Nov. 8 threats to the fullest extent. It is our expectation that the individual(s) responsible will be apprehended very soon. Investigators are following all tips and leads. As a member of the WIU community, if you see or hear anything suspicious immediately share that information with the Office of Public Safety (309/298-1949). The person responsible for these horrible hoaxes deserves to be punished to the fullest extent of the law, and they will face expulsion from the University.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to Western's housing staff, the Office of Public Safety and all law enforcement and emergency agencies that provided assistance for their swift action and their diligence in ensuring the safety of our students and our campus.
