WIU Researchers Provide Women Opportunity to Be Part of Exercise/Nutrition Study
January 18, 2011
MACOMB, IL -- With the new year underway, many people likely are still going strong with the predictably pronounced New Year's resolutions to "eat healthier" and "get in shape." But if you're one of the individuals who has trouble sticking to it and you're a woman, researchers in Western Illinois University's kinesiology (KIN); dietetics, fashion merchandising and hospitality (DFMH); and health sciences (HS) departments may be able to help.
Women in the western Illinois region may be eligible to participate in a research study investigating the effects of exercise training and/or nutrition counseling on indicators of cardiovascular disease risk, according to Ralph Graham, associate professor in kinesiology at WIU. Graham is recruiting non-smoking female volunteers, between the ages of 18 and 35, for the 12-week study.
"Other characteristics we are seeking for the participants include: not currently participating in exercise on a regular basis; no known presence of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, lupus and kidney or liver disease; and no current illness or infection. In addition, a participant's weight (in relation to her height) must fall within the highlighted area of the table below."
A potential participant's body weight (relative to height) must fall in the highlighted area of the table above.
Graham noted that the benefits of participation include free dietary/nutritional counseling; measurements of aerobic fitness and body fat percentage; free cholesterol-level measurement; the opportunity to participate in a free, supervised exercise program; and a chance to win an iPod Nano. Graham added that all information of each participant will be kept confidential.
Those interested in participating, or in obtaining more information, can contact Graham at (309) 298-1523 or RE-Graham@wiu.edu.
This project has been approved by the WIU Institutional Review Board and has funding support from the University Research Council at WIU.
