MACOMB, IL -- Joanne Sellen, former coordinator of the American language and culture program at University of Idaho, was named director of Western Illinois University's English as a Second Language (WESL) program, effective Aug. 1, according to Rick Carter, executive director of the School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach. Sellen replaces Patti Jones, who served as interim director of the program.
Sellen had served as the coordinator of the American language and culture program at Idaho since 2008. She was the curriculum coordinator for the Washington State University Intensive American Language Center from 1993-2008, and also served as an instructor in bilingual education and intensive English preparation at Washington State. While at Washington State, she also worked as an instructional designer, developing numerous online courses.
Sellen worked as an instructor for International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan, as well as the University of Pittsburg program in Tokyo and as an instructor for the New Day School in Sendai, Japan. She also served as a language instructor at The International School of English in Mexico City, Mexico.
"We welcome Dr. Sellen to Western Illinois University. She has outstanding qualifications and her experience in English language programs and international programs will continue WESL's tradition of excellence and service," Carter said. "We have had a busy past few weeks with international student orientation and Dr. Sellen's experience has allowed her to jump right into our program."
