Cordery Named History Chair

MACOMB, IL -- Simon Cordery, chair of the history department and professor of history at Monmouth College, has been named the chair of Western Illinois University's history department, effective July 1, according to College of Arts and Sciences Dean Susan Martinelli-Fernandez.Cordery replaces History Professor Ginny Boynton, who will return to the classroom after serving as chair for more than four years.
Cordery has served as chair at Monmouth College since 2008. He also served as interim chair from 2004-2005 and is also the coordinator of the Midwest Initiative. He joined the Monmouth College faculty as a lecturer in 1994. In 2005 he was the director of the ACM Central European Studies Program in the Czech Republic, and previously taught history at East Carolina University and Louisburg College (NC).
"I would like to welcome Dr. Cordery to Western. His years of experience in higher education will serve the history department well," Martinelli-Fernandez said.
Cordery is the author of two books ("Mother Jones: Raising Cain and Consciousness," 2010, and "British Friendly Societies, 1750-1914," 2003), and has published numerous articles, book reviews and book chapters. He has presented at several professional conferences and has received a variety of research grants. Cordery is a member of the American Historical Association, Friendly Societies Research Group, North American Conference on British Studies and the Society of the Study of Labour History.
He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin; a master's degree from the University of York (U.K.); and his bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University.
