MACOMB, IL –- East Village, which has housed married and graduate students, as well as students with families, at Western Illinois University since 1965, will close following the end of the Spring 2015 semester.

According to Joe Roselieb, director of residential facilities, the decision to close East Village was made due to a facility concerns and deferred maintenance. The estimated cost to renovate the facility is $1.7 million ($46,405 per apartment). To proceed with a complete renovation, apartment rental rates would be increased by at least 25 percent and renovations would max out housing and dining's departmental budgets, Roselieb said. In addition, current utility costs for East Village require nearly 84 percent of the entire graduate and family housing total annual income.

East Village is comprised of 36 apartments; currently 16 units are occupied. Following the closure, UHDS will begin the decommissioning process, and demolition, which will cost an estimated $400,000, will be scheduled at a later date. The demolition date is contingent upon funding

A meeting will be held with current residents Monday, March 30. University Village will continue to serve graduate/married students, as well as students with families.
