Walker Named WIU School of Music Director

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Professor of Music Tammie Walker has been named director of the University's School of Music.

Walker has been serving as the interim director of the school since November 2015. She has been a professor in the School of Music for 18 years.

After receiving her bachelor's degree in music from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, Walker received her master's degree in piano performance and her doctoral degree in piano performance and literature both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

During her time at Western, Walker has logged more than 300 recitals in the U.S., Europe and Asia and presented nearly 100 lecture-recitals, masterclasses and workshops. In 2014, she also traveled to Seoul, Korea on sabbatical to help foster the University's relationship in the region and to attract new students to Western.

In 2012, Walker was named winner of the College of Fine Arts and Communication Outstanding Teacher Award and the William Brattain Distinguished Service Award.

During her tenure, Walker has taught 18 courses within the WIU School of Music curriculum and has assisted extensively with recruitment to the University. She also revised the University's piano performance curriculum in 2007 (used as a model in a national publication) and created a pre-college piano program in 2008 which began as an afterschool program at Lincoln Elementary School and evolved into the WIU Community Music School.
