MACOMB, IL -- Put on your running (or walking shoes) to help Western Illinois University students and their dancing shoes!

The WIU Dance Marathon will host an inaugural 5K (3.1 mile) race Saturday, Sept. 24 as part of the organization's year-round effort to raise money for Children's Miracle Network hospitals, St. Louis Children's Hospital and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. The year-long event culminates April 1, 2017, with the 12-hour Dance Marathon, which honors the 12-hour shifts of doctors and nurses, as well as children who are unable to stand.

The event, which starts at 9 a.m. Sept. 24 (registration begins at 8 a.m.), is a 3.1 mile race through the Macomb city streets, that will begin (and end) at The Old Dairy, 210 S. Lafayette St. The $25 registration (plus $2.95 service fee) is due by Friday, Sept. 23. Online registration is available at itsyourrace.com/event.aspx?id=8062. Participants registering before Sept. 16 are guaranteed a race day t-shirt. On-site registration the day of the race is $30.

Western's Dance Marathon is entering its fourth year on the WIU campus, with this year's goal set at $100,000. Donations are welcome, and may be made by visiting tinyurl.com/wiudm17 or emailing dancemarathon@wiu.edu. Last year's event raised $70,800.
