Western Joins Carl Sandburg EduNet
November 18, 2005
GALESBURG, IL - - Carl Sandburg College (CSC) and Western Illinois University entered into an agreement that partners the two institutions in CSCÂ’s wide area network, known as EduNet. Western President Al Goldfarb attended the Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees meeting Nov. 15 and signed an agreement, along with CSC President Tom Schmidt, linking the two institutions.
WIU has interest in using the system to deliver educational services including third- and fourth-year level courses, graduate courses, and doctoral programs. WIU sees this as an opportunity to expand wireless network service to its students and to the University community. It is in keeping with WIUÂ’s regional service role to provide support for area schools, their programs, and students.
The partnership will provide students in west central Illinois within the Carl Sandburg College district access to educational opportunities without having to leave their communities.
EduNet is a broadband wireless wide area communication network designed for the purpose of transmitting/receiving data, Internet, audio, and video traffic. The main applications of the network currently are interactive distance learning, high-speed Internet access, WebCT hosting, and educational cable TV programs. Future applications will include application hosting, teacher training and certification, data bureau services, voice over IP and much more.
In addition to WIU, ten school districts are currently connected to the system. The ten districts are Abingdon, Avon, Galesburg, Knoxville, Monmouth-Roseville, United, West Central, Spoon River Valley, Williamsfield, and Yorkwood.
The EduNet project started in May 2005 with the approval of the Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees.
