MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University will host the Fifth Annual Environmental Summit Wednesday, April 2; and organizers are seeking presentations related to this year's theme, "Envisioning Sustainable Communities."

Held in conjunction with the national celebration of Earth Day in April, Western Illinois' Environmental Summit promotes environmentally sustainable values, lifestyle and educational activities for the campus community and surrounding region.

"The summit is a forum for information exchange between campus and community groups and organizations to promote environmentally responsible institutions and citizens with a sense of personal responsibility toward creating a more sustainable future," said Mindy Harpman, program coordinator of Western's Horn Field Campus and a member of the Campus Sustainability Committee, which is coordinating the summit.

Western Illinois' campus theme for 2007-2008, "Global Challenges and Personal Responsibility: Environmental Sustainability" provides the backdrop for this year's summit activities, which will include keynote speakers; faculty, student and community presentations; The Green Solutions Expo, co-sponsored by "Green Solutions," a conglomerate of environmentally concerned citizens from Knox and Warren counties, which will include displays of green vendors and organizations; and an "Envisioning a Sustainable WIU Community" exercise to educate and obtain input on a vision for sustainability and include exhibits of current University practices and best practices elsewhere, Harpman added.

Campus and community members and groups are invited to submit a variety of presentations – such as a lecture, display or panel topic – related to "Envisioning Sustainable Communities." Table displays for the Green Solutions Expo are also invited.

The deadline to submit presentation topics and to register for the expo is Monday, March 3. Contact Harpman at 309/833-5798 or e-mail MJ-Harpman@wiu.edu.
