WIU Administrator Receives Fulbright

MACOMB, IL -- Kevin Timlin, assistant director in the Center for International Studies (CIS) at Western Illinois University, has been awarded a Fulbright International Education Administrators (IEA) Program in Korea.
Timlin, one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and education professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright Scholar Program, will tour Korea June 14-28 along with three other international education administrators. Timlin will visit universities and governmental agencies in order to learn more about Korea's culture and educational system.
Timlin was named CIS assistant director in July 2005. In this role he is responsible for developing and administering the new international student orientations and for designing and implementing activities that contribute to Western's mission of internationalizing the campus. Prior to coming to WIU, Timlin was an English as a Second Lanuage instructor and coordinator of advising and activities at the University of Oklahoma. He served in the Peace Corps in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan as a foreign language technical training coordinator in 1999 and as an English techer in Kizil-Suu Village, Kyrgyzstan from 1997 to 1999.
Timlin is a member of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the West Central Officials Association and Phi Kappa Phi. He received his master's degree from the University of Oklahoma (2004) and his bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa (1994).
According to Fulbright, which was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world. The Fulbright Program, America's flagship international educational exchange program, is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Since its inception, approximately 102,900 Americans have studied, taught or researched abroad and 170,600 students, scholars and teachers from other countries have engaged in similar activities in the United States. The program operates in more than 150 countries worldwide.
Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.
