WIU-QC Library Receives Grant for Holocaust Collection
July 1, 2008
MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- The Western Illinois University-Quad Cities Library recently received a grant from a Quad Cities nonprofit to further support Holocaust education materials at the library.
The WIU-QC Library received the $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend for the library's Jeff Leibovitz Special Collection of Holocaust Education Materials. According to WIU-QC Library Instructor Tom Finley, the Leibovitz Collection is a strong set of books and other resources primarily for use in designing grade school curricula relating to the Holocaust.
The collection is named for a Western Illinois education student who died of a heart attack toward the completion of his student teaching in 1994 at the age of 38. The materials are available for use by both the University community and by local Quad Cities teachers.
WIU Libraries Marketing and Outreach Librarian Jeffrey Darensbourg said the grant is in response to a suggestion made by Dr. Marrietta Castle of Rock Island, a consultant to the Leibovitz Collection Advisory Board, for the addition of traveling trunks of educational materials to bolster classroom learning about the Holocaust. The grant will permit the purchase of two trunks.
"This grant will allow us to significantly expand and improve the Leibovitz Collection," Finley added. "We appreciate the generosity of the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend."
