MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Women's Center will host an open house and Women's Equality Day celebration from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, in Seal Hall 311-320. New and returning students, faculty, staff and community members are invited. Refreshments will be provided.
Members of the Women's Center staff and volunteer team will be on hand to greet visitors and give tours of the center, which includes a resource library, meeting room and lounge, in addition to space for the Feminist Action Alliance student organization.
"We'll also share plans and provide an update on the status of the new Multicultural Center, which will be our new home once it's completed next spring," said Women's Center Director Janine Cavicchia.
In recognition and celebration of Women's Equality Day, commemorating the 88th anniversary of women's right to vote, members of the League of Women Voters of McDonough County will be available to complete voter registration and discuss opportunities for involvement in the League's activities.
"Anyone who would like to register to vote in this fall's local and national elections will need to bring two forms of ID, including one showing a current address," Cavicchia said.
According to the National Women's History Project (NWHP) website (www.nwhp.org), the U.S. Congress designated Aug. 26 as Women's Equality Day in 1971. The date was selected to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote in 1920.
The Women's Center's theme for 2008-09 is Women's Health and Wellness, which ties in with Western's 2008-09 campus overall theme of Health and Wellness — Challenges and Responsibilities.
"We do outreach programs and have speakers on various women's health concerns, so we're excited about having the opportunity to tie these in with the broader campus theme this year."
"Our open house will provide an opportunity for the public to peruse our many resources dealing with women's health, including books, pamphlets, magazines, newsletters and journals," Cavicchia added. "Two newly acquired books that we'll have on display and available for checkout are 'The Doctor's Complete College Girls' Health Guide: From Sex to Drugs to the Freshman 15,' by Jennifer Wider, M.D., and 'What to Ask the Doc: The Questions to Ask to Get the Answers You Need,' co-authored by WIU alumna Margaret Fitzpatrick."
