OASIS to Host Welcome Back Picnic Saturday, Sept. 6
September 3, 2008
MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's Organization of Adult Students for Interaction and Support (OASIS) will host a welcome back picnic from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Everly Park Lakewood Shelter, Macomb.
Everyone is welcome to the picnic, including families with children. Hot dogs, pasta salad, chips, dessert and drinks will be provided at no cost. Games, toys and cupcake decorating will be available for children.
According to Linda Strueber, OASIS president, the organization works to promote awareness of the more than 3,000 non-traditional students at Western, including military veterans and others who are returning or coming to campus after having been in the workforce or at home with children. A student-parent subcommittee serves as a support group to address the unique issues of raising children while attending college.
"Our mission is to serve those whose needs are different from those of traditional-age college students," said Streuber, a social work major from Macomb. "We facilitate networking with campus offices and organizations for mutual problem-solving and a sense of community."
OASIS meetings are held every Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Student Organization Center Conference Room in the University Union. Membership is free.
"While OASIS primarily serves students who are older than most of their classmates—married or partnered, widowed, divorced, a veteran or a parent— all students are invited to join and participate in the meetings, programs and activities," Strueber said.
For more information, or if you require accommodations to participate in this event, contact the OASIS office at (309) 298-3284; or the Women's Center at
