Proteus 7 to Perform at Western Oct. 9

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's Bureau of Cultural Affairs (BCA) will present Proteus 7 in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 in Western Illinois' College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall, located in Simpkins Hall.

The seven-member ensemble, which has recorded four critically acclaimed albums with the Dorian label, including "For Your Ears Only," "Cha Cha Lounge," Bernstein Tribute" and "Dracula, the Seduction," combine their talents to create unique chamber music that includes elements from classical, rock and jazz music.

Proteus 7's (www.proteus7.com) members include: Anthony DiLorenzo and Geoff Hardcastle, trumpet and flugelhorn; Scott Hartman and Hans Bohn, trombone; Matthew Gaunt, tuba; Paul McCandless, woodwinds; and Feza Zweifel, percussion, collaborate together to perform.

DiLorenzo, a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, is an Emmy award-winning composer who has written music for ABC's television show "Wide World of Sports" and movie trailers for more than 70 films, such as "Forrest Gump" and "Toy Story." He has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops.

Hardcastle, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, has performed with the Cleaveland Orchestra, the Akron Symphony, the Canton Symphony, the Ohio Chamber Orchestra and Cleveland Ballet and Opera orchestras.

Hartman, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, is considered one of America's finest trombonists, according to their website. He has performed across the U.S., Europe and Japan; appeared on the "Today" Show and "Good Morning America;" and was featured in the PBS documentary "Sounding Brass."


Hans, a graduate of Northwestern University, has performed with symphony orchestras in Springfield, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Hartford and Portland, as well as with the Battle Creek Brass Band, Empire Brass Quintet, Grand Rapids Symphony, the Heidelburg Festival Orchestra and the Orchestra de Mineria in Mexico.

Gaunt, a graduate of the Boston University School for the Arts, has performed with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Boston Ballet, New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic as well as the Vermont, Springfield and Portland Symphonies.

As a collaborator and solo artist, McCandless is credited with more than 200 albums and performances with musicians and bands such as Jaco Pastorius, Carla Bley, Wynton Marsalis, Lyle Mays, Pat Metheny and Al Jarreau. In 1996, he won a Grammy award for "Best Pop Instrumental" with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, with whom he was a guest artist.

Zweindel, a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, is the founding member of Proteus 7 and has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia Opera, Cleveland Opera and the Blossom Festival Band.
