Jazz Guitar Concert Oct. 21
October 17, 2008
MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University School of Music's guitarist Matthew Warnock and guest guitarist Adam Smale will present a jazz guitar concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall, located in the northern wing of Simpkins Hall.
Warnock teaches jazz and classical applied lessons, coaches the guitar ensemble and performs in the Hopper Jazztet faculty-in-residence group at Western. He began studying guitar at the Royal Conservatory at age 16, but switched his focus to jazz studies after moving to Montreal in 1998. He completed a Bachelor of Music in jazz performance at the University of McGill, while maintaining a performance schedule of 200 gigs per year in and around Montreal. He also performed throughout central Canada as part of McGill's recruiting program. Warnock earned his Master of Music in jazz performance from Western Michigan University, and earlier this year he was awarded a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in jazz performance from the University of Illinois. He maintains private studios for jazz and classical guitarists; writes reviews and articles for several publications such as Jazz Guitar Life Magazine, Just Jazz Guitar, Fingerstyle Guitar, Modern Guitar and Jazz Guitar Gazette. Warnock also had his book, "East Coast Love Affair: Transcriptions," published in 2008 by Mel Bay Publications.
Smale (adamsmale-jazz.com), who is currently working toward his master's degree in jazz performance at Western Michigan University, where Warnock received his MMUS, will give masterclasses to Western's guitar students during the day, then perform with Warnock that evening.
"At a very early age I knew music was my life," Smale said. "I'd even skip school to come home and play guitar. That's all I wanted to do. You couldn't get it out of my hands."
Smale not only played the guitar, he changed his guitar by adding a seventh string for more musical "flexibility;" and his independent debut CD, "Fun City," was the ninth most played CD on Canadian national radio in September 2000.
The program, in which the selections will be announced from the stage, is open free to the public. For more information, contact Warnock at (309) 298-1328 or MR-Warnok@wiu.edu.
