WIU Broadcasting Students, Alumni Earn Regional Awards

MACOMB, IL - - Two current and two former Western Illinois University broadcasting majors earned six awards for their audio and video packages at the National Broadcasting Society's Heartland Region conference held in Omaha, NE, in late October.

Submissions produced between September 2007 and September 2008 were judged.

Sophomore Kyle Schassburger (South Holland, IL) won first place in audio sports with his segment called "Leatherneck" and first place in audio play-by-play for "(Quincy) Hawks-Leathernecks Football."

Sophomore Beth Terpening (Monmouth, IL) earned an honorable mention for her audio commercial "Brighter Life Bookstore."

Kyle Dierking, originally from Chatham, IL, and a Fall 2007 broadcasting graduate, took first place in the video sports program category with "Pigskin Preview." He is employed as a video journalist for NewsOn6.com, the Web site of The News on 6, a CBS affiliate in Tulsa, OK.

Liz Bales (Sherrard, IL), a Summer 2008 broadcasting alumna, placed second in the video new package category with "Avoiding Tragedy."

These entries will be entered into the national competition, which will take place at the 67th national convention for the National Broadcasting Society, March 24-29, 2009 in New York City.
