MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- Western Illinois University faculty, per WIU policy, are reminded that students missing class due to having a flu-related illness will be allowed to make up missed assignments and exams.

The absence policy, which was reviewed last month by the Faculty Senate and UPI and is similar to absence policies in place at other state universities, also states that students with flu-like symptoms will not be counted as absent, regardless of the class's attendance policy. Documentation of student illness may not be available and is not necessary.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 26, WIU-Macomb students missing class as a result of displaying flu-like symptoms or being diagnosed with H1N1 must e-mail their professors directly and copy SDO at SDO@wiu.edu. WIU-Quad Cities students must contact the Office of Academic and Student Services (OASS) at (309) 762-9080.

According to WIU President Al Goldfarb, the University must err on the side of caution should there be any question of the seriousness of a student's illness.

"It appears as if flu-like illnesses are increasing among the campus community. I'm asking all faculty and employees to be flexible as we work through these illnesses," Goldfarb added.
