2007 Presidential Performance Review
Jessie L. Kallman, a graduate student from Moline, Illinois, was elected by the student body to serve as the Student Representative to the Board of Trustees from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. Jessie graduated from Black Hawk College in 2005 and WIU in 2007 with a degree in Political Science and minors in both History and Communications. She is currently working to obtain her Masters in Sociology.
During her time at Black Hawk College, she remained active on campus as Student Government senator, President of the College Democrats, Secretary of the Social Action Committee and Vice Chair of the House Education Committee for Model Illinois Government. She was also very involved with her local community in Moline and volunteered for several local campaigns.
Her active participation carried over as she entered WIU. In four semesters, Jessie served as Grote Hall Senator, Speaker-of-the-Senate, Senator-at-large and Student Services Chair for the Student Government Association. She served as both the Secretary and President of the Associated Students of Political Science where she worked hard to encourage democratic participation amongst students. As President, Jessie was notable for her work in bringing the 2006 Congressional debate to campus. In her avid attempt to engage students politically, she also introduced new topics and issues to students, weekly, as a political columnist for the Western Courier. As a member of the WIU delegation at Model Illinois Government, Jessie served as Chair of the Senate Firearms, Alcohol and Tobacco Committee. In the summer of 2006, Jessie was a member of the Learning to Lead program and interned for Senator Richard J. Durbin in the U.S. Capitol Building. Outside of WIU, Jessie writes monthly political articles for Chicago-Clubline Magazine, which targets ages 18-35.
As a member of the WIU Board of Trustees, Jessie is dedicated to representing the students on the Board, while helping unite the student voice. As a member of the Board, Jessie plans to continue increasing awareness amongst students. She wants to work to build more partnerships with the administration, city and community “…because ultimately we are one Macomb and together we can be a louder voice for Western Illinois University.”
