Jackie, Senior

Jackie was unsure of what career she wanted after college, just like the majority of freshmen students.

Then, "I discovered the communication department my sophomore year," she said. "Since then I've realized I want to work with special events, and communication can give me that opportunity. That's also when I chose RPTA (recreation, park and tourism administration) as a minor.

"RPTA has classes like 'Conference and Convention Planning' and 'Resort Management' that relate specifically to the type of career that I want to pursue."

Academics are important to Jackie, but there's more to the college experience and she's living it. She keeps busy as a member of the Westernettes Danceline, which performs at home football and basketball games, as well as some University special events; and she works with admissions, giving tours to potential incoming students and their families.

Is college what you expected?

"College life at Western is everything I anticipated and more. It's hard to understand everything that comes with it until you actually get the chance to live it for yourself," Jackie said.

"Each year is better than the last. I become aware of more opportunities on campus and meet more people. I had no idea how many opportunities Western gives student to get actively involved. Every week I receive e-mails about special events departments offer. It's nice to know that the college is always providing things for the students to do outside the classroom," she added.

Tell us about the Westernettes.

"I decided to try out for the Westernettes Danceline my second semester freshman year, and that was possibly one of the best decisions I have made here at Western," Jackie said. "Getting involved in this group has taught me to have great pride in our school. I loved Western prior to getting involved; however, this particular group opened my eyes to what a great university I am attending."

Was there an "adjustment period" for you coming to Macomb from suburban Chicago?

"I did have to make an adjustment when I came to Western. I was used to a fast-paced life with any store or restaurant available whenever I needed or wanted something. However, it wasn't hard to get used to my new surroundings," Jackie said. "I've found I can always get what I need in Macomb as well. I appreciate Macomb for the town outside the campus because I don't have to worry about getting distracted from school work."

What's your favorite thing about Western?

"That has to be the amount of support I receive from the professors and students. I think that comes directly from the student-to-professor ratio (16:1)," Jackie said. "I also love how the campus is set up, everything is within walking distance."
