ABET at WIU

The purpose of this page is to give you a brief overview of what ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) is all about at the Western Illinois University School of Engineering. You will see links in this document that will lead you to additional information from the source.

Is WIU ABET Accredited?

Not yet. ABET requires that we graduate at least one student from our program before they will come on campus and evaluate the program for accreditation. Assuming all goes well, the accreditation would be retroactive one year from the date of the on-campus visit. Thus any graduates from our program would be covered.

Why ABET?

Graduating from an ABET accredited institution is a requirement in most states for professional licensure as an engineer. By complying with the requirements of ABET, you are assured that the engineering education you receive meets the quality requirements of professional engineering societies and most businesses that use engineers. What are the ABET requirements for a General Engineering Program?

The curriculum requirements for ABET accreditation are, in general: 1) satisfy the General Education requirements of the institution (WIU); 2) complete one year of Math and Science appropriate to the engineering degree; 3) complete a year and a half of Engineering Courses; and 4) complete the requirements for a bachelor degree. See the following for more information from the ABET website. (http://www.abet.org/the_basics.shtml)
