Dr. Cunningham received his M.A. from WIU in 1979. His experiences in law enforcement include two years as a military police officer with the U.S. Army and corporate security with the John Deere Corp. in Iowa. He has taught law enforcement classes at several colleges and universities, as well as conducted local and regional training for police departments. He has published numerous articles on public policing and private security and continues to work closely with law enforcement agencies through his position on the Illinois Crimestoppers State Board of Directors. Additionally he has served for 10 years as the president of the McDonough County Crimestoppers Board of Directors. He received a Ph.D. in criminology from Florida State University in 1996 and continues research in the area of crime prevention through environmental design and criminal investigations.
