Professor Rehling earned his bachelor's degree from DePaul University in 1974, and juris doctorate in 1977. He has been teaching at Western since 1996, where his focus is law. Professor Rehling teaches courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence.

Prior to joining the faculty at WIU, Professor Rehling spent 13 years with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. While there, he worked in the juvenile court as both a courtroom attorney and the supervisor, and also worked in felony review, grand jury, preliminary hearing courts, and the felony trial courts. He also has six years of experience in private legal practice that included both criminal and juvenile law, and has been a teacher of police officers in juvenile police officer certification classes.
