Scholarship Programs

Things to do before you get started:

- Write a short (1-2 page) general essay explaining your educational goals and how obtaining a scholarship would help you to meet those goals. Many scholarship applications request an essay of this sort, so having one ready to go will put you one step ahead! make sure to type the essay and save it as an electronic document that can be edited as needed for various scholarship apllications.

- Identify some people you know who would be in a good position to write Letters of Recommendation. Scholarship applications oftern request "letters of recommendation" from sources who have been involved in your educational history, so it is helpful to think of who you would ask to write these letters. Good sources include past or present teachers, guidance counselors, and other sources qualified to provide such a letter.

You can make applying for a new scholarship a quick and easy process by having these items ready to go ahead of time. However, you will want to carefully read the essay and recommendation letter criteria for each scholarship that you wish to pursue, so that you may shape the content of the essay to fit the scholarship for which you are applying.

Search for Scholarships or Grants

Scholarships and grants are basically gifts which you don't have to pay back. However, they are often awarded based on financial need or on some type of merit. The trick is to figure out what you're skilled at, and seek out scholarships that find merit in that particular skill. In addition, scholarships and grants may also be awarded based on the career that you are pursuing (for instance teaching or science). Lastly, your local community, associations and organizations may award scholarships because you happen to live in their geographical area.

WIU Scholarship Sources

Western Illinois University oversees many of its own scholarships through our Scholarship Office, and applying for most of these can be as easy as submitting just one scholarship application form. This is a chance to file one single scholarship application that could put you into considereation for a wide range of scholarships with one easy step.
