I. Call to order
Chris Sanders-Ring called to order the regular meeting at 11:52 a.m.
II. Roll call
The following persons were present: Chris Sanders-Ring, Di Ann Vulich, Allyson Borkgren, Audrey Adamson, Patty Barnes, Leslie Kahler, Debbie Norris, and Shaun Robinson.
III. Open issues
a) National Arts & Humanities Month: For a celebration of LGBT visibility in the arts spearheaded by Chris, IDEAS will be partnering with UNITY to attend the Rocky Horror Picture Show performance at the District Theatre in Rock Island on October 25 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for $17 and may be obtained through Chris. IDEAS purchased 10 tickets, seven of which were distributed to the board and members at the meeting. It was unanimously voted to donate the remaining three tickets.
Shanna is preparing an anti-bullying themed multimedia display, which will include a showing of the documentary Bully (time and date to be announced).
Di Ann is organizing a salute to youth involvement in the arts, which will include art created by area students and a poetry recital in the atrium on October 24 at 12:30 p.m.
Allyson’s celebration of the Gothic will feature several works by local artists, as well as a large display board with information on the genre. Actor Matt Moody will be giving a dramatic reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “Ulalume” on October 31 at 12:30 p.m. on campus (room to be announced). Dr. Mark Mossman’s Intro to Poetry class has been invited to attend. The IDEAS meeting that day will be abbreviated to allow time to set up for the performance.
b) Budget: Chris announced that our remaining balance is estimated to be $1800. There will be official review of the budget at the next meeting, after reimbursements are distributed for purchases made using board members’ personal funds. Audrey will help with better methods for making club purchases.
c) National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo): Shaun will contact the writing center to plan an event catering to creative writers.
d) The Bash: We have requested the use of the atrium on November 8 for the Bash. Our short fiction contest will again be held, but we will not be limited submissions to a particular theme. Story submissions should be fewer than 1500 words (6 printed pages) in length. Audrey will find judges and handle the submissions. Stories will receive Amazon gift cards for being ranked 1st ($75) 2nd ($50), and 3rd ($25). Winners must be present to claim the gift cards. If a chosen person is not present, the card will be given to the writer of the next highest ranking story.
IV. New business
a) Spring ’14 Board Nominations: Audrey Adamson will handle the election of next semester’s board members. Self-nominations are due by October 28 to Audrey at ANW-Adamson@wiu.edu. She will receive and share all candidate statements, receive all votes, and announce the Spring board on November 1. Current board members wishing to retain their positions or assume a different position must re-nominate themselves. There will be no automatic reelection, per our constitution.
Chris Sanders-Ring adjourned the meeting at 12:22 p.m.
