"I initially chose WIU-QC based on the location being close to my hometown and its affordability, as I knew I wanted to eventually go on to graduate school to earn a master’s degree in library and information science. While I was excited to pursue a degree in English, I had no idea how personal and thoughtful my experience would be. While studying in the English program, I had the privilege of learning from and working with two of the greatest mentors I have ever had: Dr. Dan Malachuk and Dr. Everett Hamner. While I am a very shy and introverted person, these professors brought me out of my shell and pushed me to my full potential. Examples of this include Dr. Malachuk helping me set up an internship with the Davenport Public Library and helping me complete a thesis my senior year and Dr. Hamner encouraging me to be the secretary of a club on campus and making me a better writer with every paper I wrote. More importantly, though, I felt so valued throughout all four years of my degree; it was an amazing experience to have your professors know you on an individual basis and to know their doors were always open to you for anything you needed. While I am now pursuing my master’s degree at the University of Illinois and working as a graduate assistant for the Social Sciences, Health, and Education Library on campus, I will never forget the lifelong relationships I have made at WIU-QC; I truly would not be where I am today without them."
