Haiti is an impoverished nation with unique healthcare challenges.  Engaging with healthcare professionals to help problem solve and deliver care with limited resources provides you a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will change your outlook on global health.

About Program

Entry Requirements

Passport required - Must be valid until at least April 30, 2019.

Visa may be required if not a US citizen. It is your responsibility to check the Embassy of Haiti website to see if you need a visa.  Visa cost not included in program cost. 

All travelers must pay entry fee at the airport on arrival in Haiti.  Current cost: $10, cash only  not included in program cost 

 
Health Insurance

You must have health insurance for the time you are on your program.  Only two options are approved to meet this requirement:

 
Health Precautions

Walking/mobility/travel - Standing for 3-4 hours on cement.  Riding in vehicles on twisting mountain roads for up to 3 hours at a time.  Expect to walk 3-5 miles per day.  It is not consecutive but scheduled throughout the day.  Walking will sometimes be over uneven terrain and up/down flights of stairs.  You will also be responsible for moving your own luggage.

Environmental - Temperatures may be higher than 95° F with high humidity.  The air can be smoky from cook fires.  Sun protection and increased hydration are strongly recommended. 

Zika - Cases of Zika virus have been reported in Haiti.  Pregnant women should not travel to Haiti.  All other travelers should read about traveling to areas with Zika on the CDC website and discuss any concerns with your health care provider.

Dietary - Some meals are included in the program cost. Contact Kim McDaniel if you have food allergies or other dietary restrictions. 

Accessibility and accommodation are very different than that found in the United States.  Please contact the Disability Resource Center for questions on the availability of accommodations for your specific situation.

PLEASE NOTE   It is your responsibility to request accommodation from the DRC; faculty and staff are not legally permitted to inquire about such needs.  Requests should be made as early as possible so there's sufficient time to arrange accommodations in your location.

Passport copy deadline: July 6, 2018  Failure to meet this deadline will result in removal from the group flight and possible increased costs.

Academics

Credit offered

NURS 379 - Fulfills the FLGI requirement for Nursing majors.  Can be used as a substitute for NURS 316 Transcultural Nursing or as a Nursing elective

NURS 679 - Can be applied to graduate school credit or continuing educan for current medical professionals, including licensed medical professionals, nurses with BSN, and allied health services.

HS 379 - Counts as an upper-division elective for Public Health and Social Work majors.

HS 679 - Counts as an elective for a MS in Health Sciences

Class sessions

Active class participation, including contribution to discussions and attendance, is expected in all phases of the Course.  Students are responsible for completing pre-departure assignments including readings and discussion participation, attendance and active participation during on-site visits, guest lectures and activities, and post-return assignments.  Questions about course content should be directed to Professor White
