Heart of Illinois Down Syndrome Association
We are a local organization of parents and interested persons
working together to improve the quality of life for persons with
Down Syndrome.
Facts
- Down Syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality caused by the presence of an extra chromosome. It is the leading cause of mental retardation
- Down Syndrome causes delays in physical and intellectual development. There is a wide range of mental ability, behaviors and physical development in children born with Down Syndrome.
- 95% of children with Down Syndrome function within the mild to moderate range of mental retardation.
- Approximately 50% of the individuals with Down Syndrome have heart defects. Most of these defects may be surgically corrected. Other common characteristics are low muscle tone and speech delays.
- Persons with Down Syndrome benefit greatly from loving homes, early intervention, good education programs, appropriate medical care and positive public atitudes.
Goals
- To offer support and information to help families adjust to the special needs of a child with Down Syndrome.
- To promote public awareness and better understanding of Down Syndrome.
- To integrate persons with Down Syndrome into all aspects of educational and community life.
- To serve as advocates when needed.
More Information
Heart of Illinois Down Syndrome Association meets the first Monday evening of each month, September through May. Special presentations, films and parent interaction serve to keep members updated.
We maintain a support library of print and video resources to inform parents and he public of the social, medical and educational aspects of Down Syndrome.
