Description: All children deserve opportunities to express themselves with different media and to become fully immersed in art experiences that foster imagination and creativity. In this workshop we will explore how the arts can contribute significantly to a child's overall development and learning. We will discuss creative ways to include developmentally appropriate art experiences that can be integrated throughout the early childhood curriculum. We will provide specific strategies for fostering the young artists in your classroom as they create and appreciate visual art.

Presenter Bios: Mindy Ely is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist with STARnet Regions I & III. She received her BS. Ed. from Illinois State University with an endorsement in the area of visual impairments in 1993. Mrs. Ely began her career as a Teacher for the Visually Impaired and then as a Developmental Therapist for Vision. Later she worked as the Vision Specialist with Hearing and Vision Connections where she planned and provided training and technical assistance to families and professionals on issues related to blindness. Mindy has served on the Illinois Vision Leadership Council since 2001 and the International Blind Preschool Summit Group since 2006. She was a board member-at-large and then president of the Illinois chapter of the Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER). She currently serves on the National AER board. In 2012 she was honored with IAER's Distinguished Service Award and the American Foundation for the Blind's Spungin Fellowship. Mindy was recognized as an Honored ISU Alumni in 2008 for her contributions to the field of Special Education. She served on the ISU Department of Special Education Board in 1998, 2009, and 2010. Considered one of Illinois' leading experts in early childhood and vision loss, Mindy has become a sought after speaker and consultant.

Anna Owen, M.S. Ed., is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist with STARnet Regions I & III. Anna has been involved in the field of early childhood since 2003. Her previous jobs include regional training coordinator for Child Care Resource and Referral, as well as parent educator and preschool teacher for the Rock Island Regional Office of Education. Anna has been with STARnet Regions I and III since November 2009. In her role as an Early Childhood Resource Specialist, she provides technical assistance and training to early childhood professionals and families. Throughout the years, she has served on several conference planning committees and has presented workshops on topics such as: Math, Science, Art, Literacy, Social/Emotional Development, Conflict Resolution, Praise vs. Encouragement, Transitioning Throughout the Day, Teaching Strategies GOLD, Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards and more. When she is not working she enjoys photography and spending time with her husband and two young children.

Continuing Education - This workshop and webinar will provide 6.5 contact hours for the following:

  • CPDUs (Continuing Professional Development Units) for teacher certification
  • CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) 8
  • CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals
  • Gateways to Opportunity credit in area(s) E
Full attendance in the workshop portion AND full participation in the webinar is required to receive a certificate.
