Description: Participants will learn how to sign short phrases and sentences commonly used with young children and how to help children develop their
expressive and receptive ASL skills. This session will build on the information learned in the morning session, but attendance at the morning session is not
required for those who already know basic signs used with young children. Please note that the morning session (basic sign) and the afternoon session
(beyond the basics) are considered separate events and the prior is not a prerequisite for the latter. You can register for the morning only, the afternoon
(+webinar) only, or both.
Presenter Bios:Marcia Breese, Outreach Coordinator for the Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) has worked in the field of deafness/disabilities for more
than twenty five years. As the parent of two adult children who are deaf, Marcia has been using American Sign Language as a means of communication for
more than 30 years.
Curt Kuhn, Outreach Trainer/Consultant, is one of a set of identical triplets who were born deaf. Curt graduated from the Illinois School for the Deaf and
Gallaudet University and is the parent of four children with hearing loss which includes a set of triplets. In addition to his job at ISD, Curt teaches a class in
ASL at a local high school.
This training will provide 4.5 contact hours for the following:
- CPDUs (Continuing Professional Development Units) for teacher certification
- CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) #2
- CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals
- Gateways to Opportunity credit in area(s) D
Full attendance for the workshop portion AND full participation in the webinar is required to receive a certificate.
